Do You Lift, Bro?

If you’ve ever wandered through the older apartment buildings of New York, you may have noticed something a little unusual. Hidden behind ornate brass gates and polished timber interiors are lifts that look more like works of art than modern machinery. Some of the earliest versions even required an operator—or, going back even further, someone to physically crank them into motion.

It certainly puts waiting an extra 30 seconds for the lift in your apartment building into perspective.

Seeing one recently got me thinking. As Newcastle and Lake Macquarie continue to embrace apartment living, it’s interesting to look back at one of the inventions that quietly transformed the way our cities were built.

Fortunately, these days we simply press a button.

The Lift That Changed the Skyline

People have been lifting heavy objects for thousands of years. The ancient Romans used pulley systems powered by people and animals to move materials around buildings, while crude lifting platforms appeared in castles and mines throughout Europe.

The real game changer came in 1853, when American inventor Elisha Otis demonstrated the world’s first safety elevator in New York.

During a public demonstration, Otis stood on a platform high above a crowd while an assistant dramatically cut the supporting rope. Rather than crashing to the ground, the platform locked into place thanks to his newly invented safety brake.

His famous words?

“All safe, gentlemen… all safe.”

That single invention changed everything.

Before then, few people wanted to live or work on the upper floors of buildings. Climbing six or seven flights of stairs every day wasn’t exactly an attractive proposition.

Once lifts became safe and reliable, architects suddenly had permission to think upwards.

When Lifts Were a Luxury

Today we often treat lifts as little more than a convenient box with buttons. But they weren’t always that way.

Many of the grand buildings constructed throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s featured spectacular lift cars complete with polished timber panelling, decorative brass fittings, wrought iron gates and handcrafted detailing. Riding the lift was intended to be part of the experience.

Some heritage buildings in Sydney still retain beautifully restored examples, including lifts inside landmarks such as the Queen Victoria Building and several historic office buildings in the CBD, where original lift cages and decorative doors remain part of the architecture. Here in Newcastle we have the ‘Segenhoe’ Apartments on Wolfe St that still features some of these characteristics.

In many ways, these early lifts were as much a statement piece as the grand staircases they often replaced.

The Human Side of the Lift

Long before lifts became fully automated, many required a dedicated operator.

These attendants controlled the speed, lined the lift up with each floor, opened and closed the gates, greeted residents and visitors, and often knew everyone by name.

In New York, this evolved into another famous role—the apartment doorman or concierge.

In many of Manhattan’s older buildings, concierges still greet residents, accept parcels, assist visitors and provide a level of service that’s become part of the building’s identity.

While Newcastle and Lake Macquarie aren’t quite Manhattan, we’re beginning to see elements of this lifestyle emerge.

Many of our newer apartment developments now include secure foyers, parcel lockers, building managers, resident amenities and concierge-style services. As apartment living becomes more common, these features are becoming increasingly attractive to buyers looking for convenience, security and a lock-up-and-leave lifestyle.

Who knows? Perhaps one day your building manager will know your coffee order before you do.

Newcastle Is Growing Up

Apartment living is becoming an increasingly important part of Newcastle’s future.

As our city continues to grow around existing infrastructure, transport and employment hubs, higher-density living allows more people to enjoy the benefits of being close to beaches, cafés, restaurants, the harbour and the CBD without expanding endlessly into surrounding suburbs.

With that comes a greater appreciation for building design, shared facilities and, yes… reliable lifts.

Thankfully, today’s lifts are incredibly sophisticated. They’re faster, quieter, more energy efficient and considerably safer than their early ancestors. Some can even predict peak demand, group passengers travelling to similar floors and reduce waiting times using intelligent software.

Not bad for something that once relied on someone turning a crank.

A Small Invention That Changed Cities

It’s easy to overlook the humble lift because we use one without giving it much thought.

Yet without it, many of the skylines we admire today simply wouldn’t exist.

From ornate hand-operated lift cages in old New York buildings to sleek glass elevators overlooking Newcastle Harbour, the lift has quietly shaped the way we live, work and build our cities.

So next time you step into an apartment lift, spare a thought for Elisha Otis, the brave inventor who trusted his own safety brake in front of a crowd over 170 years ago.

And perhaps be grateful that your morning commute doesn’t involve cranking yourself up eight floors before your first coffee.

Now that’s a workout.

Thinking about buying or selling an apartment in Newcastle or Lake Macquarie? Whether it’s a heritage building full of character or a modern high-rise with every convenience, I’d be happy to help you navigate the market—no heavy lifting required.

Luke is humble, kind and a skilled negotiator. We have found him to be a standout human in an industry that's not highly regarded. It can be difficult to know who to trust - we can trust Luke and Murdoch Property - he's not flashy & genuinely cares.

He took the time to explain things clearly, answered my questions honestly, and never made me feel like I was a bother. Luke is incredibly knowledgeable, but what sets him apart is the way he combines that knowledge with genuine care for his clients. He was always accessible, kept me informed throughout the sale, and regularly went above and beyond what I expected from a real estate agent. “5 STARS” are just not enough …! We hadn’t sold or purchased a property in over 25 years - so the prospect of selling was daunting. From the start however, Luke made the process extremely streamline - explained the process, and what to expect. Luke has a very fine tuned selling process which saw our investment property - photographed, on the website and open houses within 2 weeks we had ample offers to make a decision after this short period - which was based On Luke following up all offers ensuring they had finance etc approved. We had a tenant who had just moved out of this property - and Luke was extremely patient and informative of his processing the sale of our property to the tenant. this ensured a very smooth transition to selling the property vacant.
