Who is Murphy and What is His Law Anyway!?

If you’ve lived long enough, you’ve probably heard someone utter the famous phrase, “It’s Murphy’s Law.”

In fact, just last week I was chatting with a gentleman who was preparing his home for sale. Like many sellers, he had a list of jobs he wanted to complete before putting the property on the market. One of those jobs was painting the exterior.

The problem?

As soon as the paintbrushes came out, the rain clouds rolled in.

With a laugh and a shake of his head, he said, “Murphy’s Law.”

It got me thinkingβ€”where did this famous saying actually come from, and why do we still use it so often today?

The Origin of Murphy’s Law

Murphy’s Law is commonly summed up as:

“Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.”

The phrase is believed to have originated in the late 1940s with an American aerospace engineer named Edward Murphy. During a military testing program, a technician reportedly installed sensors incorrectly, causing the experiment to fail. Murphy’s response was something along the lines of, “If there’s any way to do it wrong, someone will.”

Over time, the saying evolved into the Murphy’s Law we know today and became part of everyday language around the world.

Of course, Murphy probably never imagined his name would become associated with delayed paint jobs, flat tyres, missing house keys, or washing left on the line just before a storm.

Why We Still Use It

The funny thing about Murphy’s Law is that most of us don’t actually believe the universe is conspiring against us.

What it does capture perfectly is a very human experience.

We notice bad timing.

We remember the day we washed the car and it rained.

We remember the week we planned an outdoor event and the weather turned.

And if you’re getting your home ready for sale, you definitely remember the tradesperson who was available every day except the one day you needed them.

Murphy’s Law gives us a way to laugh at those moments instead of letting them drive us crazy.

Murphy’s Law and Real Estate

If there’s one industry where Murphy’s Law seems to make regular appearances, it’s real estate.

A seller decides to repaint the fence and suddenly a week of rain arrives.

The garden looks perfect for months, then a windstorm blows through the day before photography.

The lawnmower breaks down right before the open home.

Or perhaps the one room that never leaks suddenly develops a drip after the wettest month in years.

The reality is that preparing a home for sale involves dozens of moving parts, and occasionally things won’t go exactly to plan.

The good news is that experienced agents, tradespeople, photographers and stylists have seen it all before. Most challenges can be worked around, and sometimes those unexpected delays even lead to a better outcome.

A Little Perspective

Perhaps that’s why Murphy’s Law has survived for more than 75 years.

It’s not really about things going wrong.

It’s about recognising that life is rarely perfect, plans often need adjusting, and sometimes all you can do is smile, adapt and carry on.

So if you’re currently preparing your home for sale and the weather, the timing or the universe seems determined to test your patience, take comfort in knowing you’re not alone.

And rememberβ€”Murphy may occasionally win a small battle, but with a bit of planning and flexibility, he doesn’t usually win the war.

Although if you’re planning to paint your house next week, it might still be worth checking the weather forecast first.

Amazing agent! . Luke is extremely professional and knowledgeable. He takes his work very seriously. We knew we were in good hands and could trust and rely upon him throughout the process to achieve a wonderful outcome for us selling our loved family property. We cannot recommend Luke enough!!

Luke is humble, kind and a skilled negotiator. We have found him to be a standout human in an industry that's not highly regarded. It can be difficult to know who to trust - we can trust Luke and Murdoch Property - he's not flashy & genuinely cares.

Highly recommended. Luke's approach to selling is friendly yet very professional, consistent, prompt and thorough in his communication. He made the process so much easier than we imagined and provided much needed support and advice that helped achieve the sale. His Newcastle market knowledge was outstanding and communicated in an easy to understand manner. Back office support from Diana was also greatly appreciated. I highly recommend Luke and his team to anyone seeking to sell their home.

Calm, Professional and Trustworthy from Start to Finish. Selling our property was a significant decision, and I am so grateful I had Luke Murdoch guiding me through the process. What I appreciated most about Luke was his calm and steady nature. No matter what was happening, he remained approachable, level-headed, and reassuring. He took the time to explain things clearly, answered my questions honestly, and never made me feel like I was a bother. Luke is incredibly knowledgeable, but what sets him apart is the way he combines that knowledge with genuine care for his clients. He was always accessible, kept me informed throughout the sale, and regularly went above and beyond what I expected from a real estate agent. Selling a home can be stressful, but Luke's professionalism, patience, and even temperament made the whole experience feel much easier. He's not only an excellent agent but also an all-round good guy who genuinely wants the best outcome for the people he works with. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Luke to anyone looking to sell their property.

A great real estate agent and an all-round good bloke.

β€œ5 STARS” are just not enough …! We hadn’t sold or purchased a property in over 25 years - so the prospect of selling was daunting. From the start however, Luke made the process extremely streamline - explained the process, and what to expect. Luke has a very fine tuned selling process which saw our investment property - photographed, on the website and open houses within 2 weeks we had ample offers to make a decision after this short period - which was based On Luke following up all offers ensuring they had finance etc approved. We had a tenant who had just moved out of this property - and Luke was extremely patient and informative of his processing the sale of our property to the tenant. this ensured a very smooth transition to selling the property vacant.
